GOING GREEN.....
It's a decision many consumers are debating these days with the rising cost of heating
and cooling their homes, the alarming concerns over global warming and the
constant reminder to REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE.
Did you know that there is a guideline that defines the use of "green"? Here is an overview of how "Green"  building was defined, and how it is ultimately achieved.

The National American Standards Institute, the institute that oversees the creation and use of thousands of norms and guidelines that directly impact businesses in nearly every sector, recently approved The National Green Building Standardâ„¢.  A combined effort between the ICC and NAHB, the Standard provides the "green" practices that can be incorporated into new homes, including high-rise multifamily buildings, home remodeling and additions, hotels and motels, and the site upon which the green homes are located.

Green practices include:
* A thoughtful approach to lot design, preparation and development
* The conservation and preservation of building resources, energy, and water thru efficient design and use
* The effective implementation of indoor environmental quality
* Education and the willingness of building owners to operate and maintain their properties with care.

There are four threshold levels of building green which a builder can achieve... Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Emerald. These levels provide builders with a means to achieve basic, entry-level green building, or achieve the highest level of sustainable "green" building that incorporates energy savings of 60 percent or higher. The Standard can be used by any builder for their individual projects, or be the basis for a local community or state green building program.

Thru continuing education, printed materials and an ongoing awareness of our global situation, many builders today are consciously aware of the need for change in the building industry to incorporate these practices in the home building process. Since "green" building is still in its tender young years and has not necessarily proven itself as financially prudent for all, the effort to convert has been slow but steady. The financial payback for some incorporation is several years and thought to be not worth the effort for some while other implementations such as lot design and the direction in which a home faces for maximum energy efficiency can be little more cost to you than your time to sit down and strategize the layout of the home a little further.

Depending upon the level "green" to which you are willing to go and commit yourself to financially is up to you. The resources and knowledge available to us now thru the internet makes building even the simplest of eco friendly homes financially affordable for all.
